SENIA is pleased to announce that the Sign & Tell Project has been awarded September’s SENIA World Changer Award. This remarkable initiative was undertaken in collaboration between hearing-impaired students and hearing students at Keningau Vocational College in Sabah, Malaysia.

The primary aim of the project is to introduce hearing peers to sign language, equipping them with essential gestures to enhance communication with their hearing-impaired counterparts. The college serves a vibrant community of over 1,000 students and more than 200 staff and contract workers. However, there exists a significant challenge: only a limited number of special education teachers are proficient in sign language, which hampers communication for the approximately 30 hearing-impaired students enrolled.

Recognizing this barrier, the Sign & Tell Project was launched to bridge the communication gap, fostering an inclusive environment where all students can express their needs and wishes effectively. The ultimate goal of this initiative is to cultivate a community where sign language is embraced and utilized by everyone.

We commend the Sign & Tell Project for its commitment to inclusivity and communication, and we celebrate its well-deserved recognition as a World Changer.
