Getting Around Jakarta

Simple transportation guidance for conference visitors

Jakarta is a busy, vibrant city, and transportation is easiest when you plan ahead. For most visitors, we recommend using trusted rideshare apps, taxis, or hotel-arranged transportation. Traffic delays are normal, so build in extra time and keep your destination saved offline.

These are the easiest options for most international visitors attending the conference.

  • Grab or Gojek for rideshares by car or motorcycle
  • Bluebird taxis for trusted taxi service
  • Hotel-arranged transportation for airport transfers or accessibility needs
Available around the clock Transportation services are generally available around the clock, though travel time can vary significantly with traffic.

Best Transportation Options

For a smooth visit, start with these three options.

Rideshares

Grab and Gojek are widely used in Jakarta and are available through their apps. They are usually low to moderate in cost, depending on distance and traffic.

Cost estimate: IDR 30,000-150,000

Toll and parking fees may be added at the end of the ride.

Taxis

Bluebird is a trusted taxi provider in Jakarta. You can hail a taxi, book through the app, or call directly.

Cost: Usually slightly higher than rideshare, but still affordable.

Toll and parking fees may be added at the end of the ride.

Airport Transfers

Airport transfers can be arranged through Bluebird or your hotel. Silverbird, including Toyota Alphard vehicles, may be available for larger groups or travelers wanting more space and comfort.

Cost estimate: IDR 150,000-350,000 depending on service level.

What About Local Transit?

Jakarta has local transit options, but they may be less intuitive for first-time visitors. For ease and reliability, we strongly recommend rideshares, taxis, or hotel-arranged transportation.

Other Ways to Get Around

Car Rental

Car rentals are available through providers such as Astra and Avis, as well as through hotels and international providers. If you prefer not to book independently, your hotel may be able to assist.

Prepare your passport and driver license.

Walking and Biking

Sidewalks in Jakarta can be inconsistent, though some areas such as Central Jakarta are more pedestrian-friendly. Walking from the Kristal Hotel is possible and takes about 5 minutes. Bike lanes exist, but they are not widely used by visitors.

Wear comfortable shoes.

Helpful Travel Guidance

Accessibility Considerations

Sidewalk accessibility varies significantly across Jakarta. Rideshare vehicles may be able to accommodate specific needs if requested. For travelers who need accessibility support, we recommend arranging transportation in advance. Hotels can often help coordinate suitable vehicles.

Staying Connected

Consider purchasing a local SIM card at the airport or arranging an international roaming package before arrival. Wi-Fi is available in hotels, malls, and on campus. Google Maps works well for navigation.

Transportation Safety

  • Jakarta is generally safe for visitors, especially when traveling in groups.
  • Use trusted providers such as Grab, Gojek, Bluebird, or hotel-arranged transportation.
  • Avoid sharing personal details with drivers.
  • Keep belongings secure, especially in traffic-heavy areas.
  • Confirm your destination before starting the ride.

  • Keep your destination written down or saved offline.
  • Allow an extra 30-60 minutes of travel time.
